Building Through Love: Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Pfeiffer

As recorded in Ewha University’s 100 year history book, it was Mr. and Mrs. Henry G. Pfeiffer that in 1930 contributed to the construction of the main building (Pfeiffer Hall) which allowed Ewha University to open their Shinchon campus. Today, most of the administration departments, including the Office of the University President, are located in Pfeiffer Hall. In 1948, according to the Woman’s Division of Christian Service’s minutes, the Mrs. Annie Merner Pfeiffer Foundation already had a record of Mrs. Pfeiffer’s Fund. This Fund was given through the Ewha Womans University Cooperating Board in North America, the predecessor to the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University. The purpose of the Fund was to keep the Pfeiffer’s intentions alive, which was for the fund to be used for the maintenance of Pfeiffer Hall. Presently, the Foundation uses the interest from the Pfeiffer Fund towards building maintenance every year, and if the University makes a special request for maintenance, special aid is given. Mr. and Mrs. Pfeiffer not only helped to build the main building of Ewha but also to continue its maintenance until this day.

총장실 등 주요 행정부처가 자리잡고 있는 이화여대 본관 입구에는 흑백 사진이 한 장 걸려 있다. 이 사진 속의 인물은 파이퍼 부부로서, 1930년대 이화대학 본관(파이퍼 홀)의 신축을 도와 이화로 하여금 신촌캠퍼스 시대를 열게 한 분들이다. 1948년 당시 기독교봉사여성국 (현재 미연합감리교회 여성국의 전신) 회의록에 따르면, 이미 당시에 애니 머너 파이퍼 재단에서 파이퍼 여사의 유산에 대해 논의한 기록이 있다. 이 유산이 이화국제재단의 전신인 재미이화협동위원회를 통해 이화국제재단에 전해졌다. 기금의 목적은 파이퍼 여사의 뜻을 살려 본관의 보수 유지비로 사용하기로 정해졌다. 현재 이화국제재단은 유산으로 받은 기금을 운영하여 매년 일정 금액을 본관의 보수 유지비로 전달하고 있으며, 학교의 특별한 보수 요청이 있을 시에는 특별기금으로 지원하고 있다. 파이퍼 부부는 이화의 핵심 건물을 건축하도록 도왔을 뿐 아니라 오늘날까지도 그 건물이 유지될 수 있도록 도운 이화의 친구이다.

Love Buried in Books: Miss Dorothy B. Smith

Miss Smith was born in 1901 in Moundridge, Kansas. In 1923, she received her bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas then received her master’s degree from Chicago University and a library science degree from Columbia University. It was fate that through her friendship with Harriet Morris, and Marian Conrow who both came to Ewha University to teach as missionaries that brought Miss Dorothy Smith to Korea to teach English. Smith made donations to new scholarships and was of great help during Dr. Helen Kim’s efforts to fund raise in America for the establishment of the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University as a financial supporter. In her 70s, she assisted in the establishment of Japan International Christian University’s library and continued to help Ewha University every year through the International Foundation until her death on February 6, 1983. In her will written on January 5, 1983 one month before drawing her last breath, the very first line references her bequest to Ewha University. 

“I bequeath to Ewha Womans University one-fourth of my estate before taxes and gifts and a two fifths share of the income from the gas wells in Grant County, Kansas.” Due to Mrs. Dorothy Smith’s enduring interests in libraries, the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University has decided to use the Fund for library needs. Every year since 1984, the Foundation administered the revenues from the natural gas royalty to Ewha University.

김활란 박사의 오랜 친구인 도로시 스미스는 1901년 켄사스의 마운드리지에서 태어났다. 1923년 사우스웨스턴대학에서 학사학위를 받고 시카고대학에서 석사학위를 받았으며, 콜롬비아대학에서 도서관학으로 학위를 받았다. 이화에 선교사로 와서 가르치던 해리엇 모리스, 마리안 콘로와 우정을 나눈 인연으로 한국에 와서 영어를 가르치기도 하였다. 두 친구를 통해 이화를 알게 된 뒤, 스미스는 오랜 세월 장학금 등으로 이화를 도왔고, 특히 김활란 박사가 미국에서 기금 모금을 하고 이화국제재단을 설립하고자 애쓸 때에도 든든한 친구이자 후원자가 되어 주었을 뿐 아니라 1983년 2월 작고하실 때까지 이화국제재단을 통해 이화대학을 도왔다. 운명 한 달 전인 1983년 1월 5일에 남긴 그녀의 유언서는 제일 먼저 이화를 언급하며 시작된다:”세금과 증여를 제하기 이전의 내 재산의 1/4과, 캔사스 그랜트 카운티에 있는 천연가스 원천에서 나오는 수입의 2/5를 이화여자대학교에 유산으로 남긴다.” 이화국제재단은 이 기금을 평소 고인이 많은 관심을 보여오던 도서관 도서구입 기금으로 사용키로 결정하였다. 이확구제재단은 1984년부터 천연가스 로열티 수입을 관리하고 있으며, 매년 해당 년도의 수입금을 이화에 전달하고 있다.

A Longtime Friend of Ewha: Dr. Betty S. Mitchell

From 1971 to 1978 the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University’s President, Dr. Betty Seabury Mitchell, has contributed to Ewha W. University through the Foundation. Her gift for scholarships and operating funds, donating $200,000 for the building of a library in commemoration of the 100th year, contributions towards computerizing the library’s system, and donating various other funds totaling more than $1,000,000. In addition to her personal contributions, it was Dr. Mitchell that introduced us to the Seabury Foundation and their various grants, including the Seabury Visiting Scholars Program. Since 1978, this scholarship has enabled members of Ewha University’s faculty to come to the United States to study. 1976 was Ewha University’s 90th Anniversary and in recognition of her services, the University awarded Mrs. Betty Mitchell an honorary doctorate degree. In 1978, the Korean Department of Education awarded her a certificate of public recognition for her services and endeavors for Korean Women’s education.

How Dr. Mitchell became interested in Ewha University and the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University is very special. In the summer of 1970, during a trip to the African safari, Dr. Mitchell met the then executive director of the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University, Mrs. Hilda Dale. After hearing about Mrs. Dale’s work for Ewha, Dr. Mitchell said, “in 1969, Dr. Helen Kim came to Chicago and during her speech she said ‘I am not here to collect Funds, I am here to collect Friends for Ewha University.’ her words left a deep impression on my mind so I sent Dr. Kim a donation but I never received a reply from her.” It was Mrs. Dale who let Dr. Mitchell know that shortly after returning to Korea from her 1969 fundraising trip to America, Dr. Kim passed away in February of 1970. It was also the reason Dr. Helen Kim could not attend the inaugural meeting of the International Foundation for Ewha in 1970. Mrs. Dale then made a request to Dr. Mitchell, asking her to work for Ewha. Dr. Mitchell became the President of the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University and poured her whole heart into strengthening the Foundation. Due to all of Dr. Mitchell’s hard work for the Foundation, Dr. Helen Kim can truly call her one of the last “Friends for Ewha” that she made in her lifetime.

1971 년부터 1978년까지 국제재단 회장을 지낸 베티 시버리 미첼 여사는 이화국제재단의 장학금과 운영자금을 비롯하여 다양한 기금과 이화100주년 기념도서관 건립초기 작정금 20만 달러, 도서관의 컴퓨터화(사무자동화)를 위한 추가 기금 등 도합 100만 달러가 넘는 기금을 이화에 기부하여왔다. 이외에도 미첼 여사는 시버리재단을 통하여 다양한 기금으로 이화를 도왔으며, 특히 1978년 이래 시버리재단의 후원으로 국제재단은 교수 방문연구 프로그램을 시행하여 이화의 교수진이 미국에서 연구를 할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 1976년 이화는 창립 90주년을 맞아, 이화대학과 이화국제재단에 대한 미첼 여사의 공헌을 기려 명예박사학위를 수여하였다. 미첼 여사는 또한 1978년 한국 여성교육에 대한 공헌을 인정받아 당시 문교부의 표창을 받았다. 미첼여사가 이화대학과 국제재단에 관심을 관게 된 동시는 특별하다. 1970년 여름, 미첼 여사는 아프리카 사파리 여행에서 당시 이화국제재단 사무총장이었던 힐다 데일을 만났다. 데일 여사가 ‘이화’를 위해 일한다는 말을 듣고, 미첼 여사는 “1969년 김활란 박사가 시카고에 오셔서 강연하던 중 ‘나는 기금을 모으러 온 것이 아니라 이화의 친구를 모으러 왔다’고 한 말에 깊은 감동을 받아 김활란 박사에게 기금을 보냈으나 아무런 답을 받지 못해 궁금해하고 있었다”고 말했다. 이에 데일 여사는 김활란 박사가 1969년 기금모금을 위한 미국 여행에서 귀국한 직후, 당신이 땀흘려 동참해온 국제재단의 창립회의를 불과 몇 달 앞두고 1970년 2월에 돌아가셨다고 알려 드리고, 미첼 여사에게 이화를 위해 일해줄 것을 요청하였다고 한다. 이후 미첼 여사는 당시 막 출발한 국제재단의 회장직을 맡아 재단이 튼튼하게 설 수 있도록 심혈을 기울여 봉사해왔다. 미첼 여사는 이화를 돕기 위해 김활란 박사가 만드신 생전의 마지막 ‘이화의 친구’라 할 수 있다.
