Unlocking the future: Planned Giving

International Foundation for Ewha Womans University (IFEWU) has been fortunate to receive many endowment funds from generous donors for more than 50 years. The funds have grown in balances even after helping the University with scholarships and many other projects over the years. In this newsletter, we want to introduce and explain bequests to IFEWU, often called planned or legacy gifts as a part of the Estate Planning.

1. What can you donate to IFEWU in your will?

Not only can you leave money in your will, but you can give any of your assets to IFEWU:

• Financial assets like cash, stocks, and bonds
• Real estate 
• Personal property, like your vehicle, jewelry, or artwork
• You can also name IFEWU as the beneficiary of a non-probate asset, like your life insurance policy, retirement account, or IRA *

* The SECURE Act in 2019, with certain exceptions, requires that retirement funds such as IRAs, 401(k)s, and certain pensions given to non-spousal beneficiaries must be fully distributed within ten years. Upon distribution, they will be taxed based on the beneficiaries’ respective tax rates.  However, if you name IFEWU as a beneficiary to receive your IRA or other retirement assets in your will, neither you, your heirs, nor your estate will pay income taxes on the distribution of the assets.   

Once you decide that you want to leave a legacy gift to IFEWU, you’ll need to include this donation in your will, and you can do one of following options as an example:

• Name IFEWU as the primary beneficiary for a specific gift, such as a certain amount of money or stock.
• Allocate a percentage (for example 10%, 20%, etc.) of your total estate IFEWU. 

* To get the tax benefit (not incurring income tax), you can bequest IFEWU the remaining retirement fund balance while you bequeath non-taxable assets to your heirs.

2. Name IFEWU as a beneficiary in your will.

In your will, you need to identify IFEWU as a beneficiary as follows:

• Full name
• Street address
• Employer Identification Number (EIN) 

When you include IFEWU in your will, please contact the IFEWU office to inform. IFEWU honors donors who include IFEWU in their will. They belong to the “Helen Kim Heritage Society”*.  Please check the IFEWU website for this. 

Donating to charity, such as to IFEWU, in your will is a meaningful way to support the non-profit organizations that you care for. A bequest costs you nothing now, but if you bequeath IFEWU, it is a high-impact gift that will benefit the University and its students for years to come.

이화여자대학교 국제재단(IFEWU)은 지난 50여년, 넉넉히 도와주시는 후원자분들 덕에 자산기금을 늘려, 안정적이고 지속적으로 이화대학을 도울 수 있었습니다. 최근에는 유산 기부/사후 기부에 대한 관심이 늘고 있어, 여기 소개하고자 합니다. 

1. 유언장을 통해 무엇을, 어떻게 기부할 수 있나요?

여러분은 유언을 통해 • 현금, 주식, 채권 등의 금융 자산 • 부동산 • 차량, 귀금속 또는 예술품과 같은 개인 소유물 • 생명 보험, IRA 등 은퇴연금을 기부할 수 있습니다. 

* 2019년에 발표된 SECURE Act에 따르면, 자녀 등 비배우자가 은퇴연금(IRA, 401K 및 특정 연금)을 유산으로 물려받는 경우, 10년 이내에 전액을 분배, 인출하도록 규정하고 있습니다. 그리고 그  분배금은 세율에 따라 과세의 대상이 됩니다. 그러나 여러분이 유언장에 IRA 같은 은퇴 자산의 수혜자로 국제재단을 지정하면, 기부자나 상속인 모두 자산 분배에 따른 소득세 대상이 되지 않습니다. 

국제재단에 유산 기부를 하고자 한다면, 다음 내용을 선택할 수 있습니다.

• 특정한 액수의 현금이나 특정 주식의 일차적 수혜자로 이화국제재단을 지정한다. 

• 전체 자산의 일정 퍼센테이지(예: 10%, 20% 등)를 국제재단에 유증하는 것으로 정한다.

* 세제혜택을 받으려면 (소득세를 피하려면), 비과세 자산은 상속인에게 물려주고 나머지 은퇴연금 잔액을 이화국제재단에 유산으로 증여하면 됩니다. 

2. 유언장에 이화국제재단 (IFEWU)을 수혜자로 지정해주십시오.

유언장에 이화국제재단(IFEWU)을 수혜자로 지정하려면 이화국제재단의 정식 이름, 주소, 고용주 식별번호(EIN) 를 적어 넣어야 합니다.  이화국제재단 사무실에 연락하여 주십시오. 이화국제재단은 유산기부를 해주시는 분들을 “헬렌킴 헤리티지 소사이어티(Helen Kim Heritage Society) ”*로 등재하여 예우하고 있습니다. “헬렌킴 소사이어티(Helen Kim Society)”에 대해서는 이화국제재단 웹사이트를 참조해주십시오.

이화국제재단을 통한 유증은, 현재 당장의 비용은 들지 않는 대신, 차후 이화대학과 학생들에게 큰 도움이 되는 강력하고도 의미 깊은 후원방법입니다.
