Message from Hyang-Sook Lee, Ph.D.

Dear Friends and Supporters of Ewha,

Greetings from Ewha Womans University! It is a great honor for me to write this letter to you as the 18th President of Ewha Womans University. Ewha’s journey began 139 years ago with a single female student and it has since grown into a world-class institution for women’s higher education. This achievement has been made possible by God’s grace and the unwavering dedication of many.

The steadfast support and generosity of the International Foundation for Ewha Womans University, which will celebrate its 55th anniversary in 2025, hold a special place in Ewha’s history. We take great pride in the fact that the International Foundation was the first overseas foundation established for any university in South Korea. This reflects the pioneering spirit and global vision that Mrs. Mary F. Scranton embodied when she founded Ewha Haktang in 1886. The devotion that led to the establishment of Ewha Haktang and Po Goo Nyo Guan—providing women with education and medical care—continues to make an impact across the world today through the International Foundation.

We are now confronted with a fundamental challenge: redefining the role and status of universities in an era of rapid transformation driven by advanced technological innovations such as artificial intelligence. Ewha is committed to leading this change by reshaping education and research to meet the demands of the times. We will cultivate new academic fields that align with the needs of the future society while further strengthening the disciplines in which Ewha has traditionally excelled.

Guided by our new vision—”Ewha leading the era of great transformation through inclusive innovation“—Ewha is making preparations for a new era of science and technology, striving to pioneer the 21st century as a prestigious global university that respects the values of individuals and personal character. We ask for your continued support and encouragement as we take on this new challenge.

Together with every member of the Ewha community, we are dedicated to ensuring that “Ewha as a social asset” remains strong and enduring by embodying God’s love and justice through our contributions and role in society.

May God’s grace and blessings be with you always.

Sincerely,
Hyang-Sook Lee, Ph.D.
President, Ewha Womans University
