Giving Spirit In Ewha DNA

A few years ago, an alumna and cherished friend of Ewha established her first scholarship fund for her Alma Mater. Drawing on her experiences as a recipient of scholarships from US missionaries during her undergraduate years, she explained that “Giving is in our Ewha DNA”.

Remarkably, the International Foundation for Ewha W. University has continued to see sustained growth in its support network of partners who are interested in establishing new funds. We’d like to introduce the recently established funds that exhibit how the giving spirit in the Ewha DNA is being passed down to the next generation of students.

Sung Sook Chang Funds

Chicago alumna Mrs. Sung Sook Chang Choi (’61 Pharmacy), a long-time supporter of women’s education and leadership, has generously established two permanently restricted funds in April and May of this year – one for scholarships and one for research – each with an initial gift of $250,000. With an additional gift of $250,000 planned for next year, each fund will grow to $500,000, totaling $1 million in support for Ewha. In recognition of her visionary philan- thropy, Mrs. Choi has joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society, which honors donors whose giving leaves a lasting legacy at Ewha.

The Sung Sook Chang Scholarship Fund, once fully endowed, will support Ewha’s general scholarship program through annual distributions from its investment income. Likewise, the Sung Sook Chang Research Fund will support research activities at Ewha broadly, helping advance academic excellence across disciplines.

Mrs. Choi’s dedication to Ewha is deeply rooted in her personal experiences. As a top-performing high school student, she attended Ewha University with the support of the Helen Kim Scholarship, which left a lasting impression on her. In 1967, she immigrated to Los Angeles, and many years later, her family moved to Chicago where she established the Korean YWCA to continue her advocacy for women’s empowerment. Additionally, she founded the first Korean Language School in the Chicagoland area. Before moving to Chicago in 1980, Mrs. Choi earned her Master’s degree in Microbiology from Western Pennsylvania University while raising her three children and maintaining her career.

“I hope these funds will support students who pursue education with determination and perseverance in the face of hardship,” said Mrs. Choi. “I also want to contribute to Ewha s continued growth through research and academic excellence.”

In addition to these endowments, Mrs. Choi has also made a $500,000 gift toward the construction of the new Ewha West Campus Building, further demonstrating her enduring commitment to the advancement of her alma mater.

Mrs. Choi, who passed away last year, is remembered for her unwavering devotion, warmth, and service to her alma mater. To commemorate her legacy, Dr. Kim donated stocks and later added contributions made by friends in her memory to create this permanently restricted fund. This scholarship fund is designated to support international students at Ewha in financial need, with special consideration given to those who hope to pursue further studies in the United States – reflecting Mrs. Choi’s global outlook and deep commitment to education. In recognition of this meaningful and generous gift, Dr. Kim has been inducted into the Helen Kim Leadership Society of the International Foundation for Ewha W. University. Through this fund, Mrs. Choi’s legacy will continue to inspire and support generations of Ewha International students for years to come.

Hailee Hyejung Lee Scholarship Fund

Mr. Hosea Chang of Los Angeles, CA, has established the Hailee Hyejung Lee Scholarship Fund as a heartfelt and surprise tribute to his mother. The fund was created in November 2024 with an initial gift of $100,000. Mrs. Hailee Hyejung Lee, an alumna of Ewha (B.A. in Sociology, ’80; M.A. in Library Science ’82), currently resides in Los Angeles, CA. Helen Kim Leadership Society. Upon hearing the news, she shared, I’m still overwhelmed by such an incredible surprise, and I am simply grateful to my son. While I have not been deeply involved with Ewha in recent years, four of my six sisters graduated from Ewha, and my daugh- ter-in-law – Hosea’s wife – is also my direct junior, a fellow Sociology graduate. My son has taken the first step on my behalf, and I now feel inspired to stay more engaged moving forward.

The Hailee Hyejung Lee Scholarship Fund is a fully endowed permanently restricted fund. The investment income from the principal will provide annual scholarships for Sociology majors at Ewha who need financial aid. Additional contributions to the fund will be added to the principal, allowing even more students to benefit from scholarship support in the future.

Michelle Misook Song Scholarship Fund

Ewha alumna Michelle Misook Song (’88 Sociology) has always had a heart for giving back. In December 2024, she established the Michelle Misook Song Scholarship Fund and has since made additional contributions – bringing the total to $100,000. In recognition of her generosity, she was inducted into the Helen Kim Leadership Society, which honors those who make a lasting impact on the Ewha community. Based in the NY/NJ area, Ms. Song has spent decades uplifting her community – founding ‘Korean American Women in Action’, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering Korean American women, and serving in various local leadership roles. Whether through these efforts or her quiet acts of kindness, she has consistently sought to bring people together and make a positive impact.

Reflecting on her motivation, Ms. Song said: “Young students often have no choice over the circumstances they are born into-such as their parents’ financial status or environment – until they enter college. But in college, they begin to shape their own futures. I myself struggled financially during my college years, and that experience inspired me to give hope, courage, and dreams to students in difficult situations.”

The permanently restricted scholarship fund will support Sociology students at Ewha who are facing financial challenges. Awards will be drawn from investment income, enduring that the fund’s impact for generations to come. In this way, Ms. Song offers more than financial help – she shares her belief that education can open new possibilities and change lives.

Onsook Kim Scholarship Fund

Onsook Kim (’64 English) passed away in July 2023. In her memory, her husband established a scholarship fund with Ewha Foundation. The fund is initiated with a gift of $20,000 in 2025, and further to be added annually. He wishes the investment income generated from the fund’s growing principal will provide meaningful scholar- ships each year to support needy students at Ewha.

Mrs. Onsook Kim Lee immigrated to the U.S. in 1967, studied library science, and was the Chief Librarian of the Korean Section of Regenstein Library of the University of Chicago. For her life long, she was an artist, a devoted watercolor and

Dr. Won Oack Park Song (’69 Food & Nutrition), a professor at Michigan State University since 1984, joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society by establishing the Won Oack Park Research Lectureship Fund with an initial gift of $50,000 in February. Per her wishes, the investment income generated from the fund will be reinvested into the principal until the total target of $100,000 is reached through gifts.

This fund will support an annual lectureship by distinguished researchers, with the goal of strengthening graduate faculty research programs in the Department of Food & Nutrition. Dr. Park shared, “Through this Lectureship Fund, I hope faculty and students will gain the most up-to-date knowledge in their fields and, through the stimulation and encouragement it provides, be inspired to pursue their research

with even greater dedication.” Recognizing that research lectureships require greater resources than general scholarships, she is thoughtfully considering additional contributions to the fund’s principal in the future. Her generosity reflects a profound commitment to academic excellence and the advancement of research at Ewha.

William & Hwain Chang Lee International Scholarship Fund

A vital new initiative supporting international students at Ewha Womans University. This marks the second fund from Dr. Hwain Chang Lee ( 69 Psychology, NJ), former Vice President and now Honorary Board Member, and her husband, Dr. William Lee.

For over 30 years, Drs. Lee have been steadfast supporters of the Ewha Foundation and the University as members of the Helen Kim Society. Their generosity extends beyond financial contributions, as they have inspired others to give and promote the spirit of paying it forward. Their first scholarship fund, the Hwain Chang Lee Scholarship Fund, with a permanently restricted principal exceeding $180,000, continues to provide crucial support to Ewha’s domestic students every year.

Their latest fund, launched with an initial gift of $50,000 in June 2024, is a temporarily restricted fund dedicated to international students. It aims to provide scholarships for the next 10 years or until the fund is fully disbursed, empowering students from around the world to pursue their education at Ewha.

In addition to their financial support, Dr. Hwain Chang Lee has been a pivotal figure in various fundraising events for the International Foundation. Her leadership and dedication was especially critical during the Foundation’s 40th anniversary, where she played a key role in increasing the endowment, helping the Foundation achieve new milestones.

Reflecting on their legacy, Dr. Lee said, We are grateful to be part of the Ewha family and we are also blessed to be able to share with others. Their unwavering commitment continues to inspire and uplift the next generation of Ewha students – both domestic and international – helping them to realize their dreams.

Sungsook Hwang & Kwonshik Dennis Kim Fund

Board member Dr. Kwonshik Dennis Kim and his wife Mrs. Sungsook Hwang Kim ( 68 Korean Literature) in Minnetonka, MN, established a permanently restricted fund on January 23, 2024, with the initial gift of $100,000. The investment income from the contributed principal will be disbursed as an annual scholarship, and it might be used for tuition, dorm, and/or other expenses when needed. Dr. and Mrs. Kim are very well-known philanthropists in the Minnesota area and beyond. They help those in need and give hope to the young people.

Mrs. Kim said, “For 55 years now, since my husband went to the United States to study, obtained his degree, and started his career, we have always been grateful for God’s grace. When we settled in Minnesota, we were invited by a neighboring Rotarian and, as we adapted to life in the United States, we learned a lot about giving and sharing. Although running the business wasn t easy, as our company (EVS, Inc.) grew, we began to allocate half of the company s profits to employee welfare and give back to society through a program called EVS CARE. We are thankful for God s grace, which has given us a heart that desires to generously share with those in need.” For Mrs. Kim, Ewha W. University was the place of her spiritual foundation and cornerstone of her life. The people she met, learned from and befriended at Ewha have become her lifelong, wonderful friends. She is grateful to her proud alma mater, which gifted her with learning and lifelong relationships. Now, Dr. and Mrs. Kim wanted to give back to Ewha and joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society.

Myungwon Kang Lee Fund

New Jersey Board member Ms. Megan Myungwon Kang Lee ( 85 Applied Arts) established a permanently restricted fund in March 2024, donating stocks valued at $27,044.52. In establishing the fund, Ms. Lee said, Since I began working in the United States in 1987, there is one thing I always remember – what a professor of Home Economics Department told us on the last day of my first year at Ewha Womans University.

She said, Though I teach Home Economics, there is something I want you to remember. In Korea, even now, a girl is born, grows up as someone’s daughter, becomes someone’s wife, and then lives as someone’s mother for the rest of her life. I hope that you live a life where you can proudly use your own name. The professor’s words, along with the pride I feel in my alma mater, have given me the strength to endure tough times and to turn those challenges into opportunities for growth, rather than mere hardships. Ms. Lee hopes that her small contribution will inspire and encourage Ewha students who will go on to excel in their respective fields in the future.

Hong Sisters Scholarship Fund

In September 2023, Mrs. Sungcha Hong Cha ( 64 English) in Arlington, VA, generously established the Hong Sisters Scholarship Fund with a gift of $100,000 and joined the esteemed Helen Kim Leadership Society. Mrs. Cha and her three sisters Chungok Hong ( 62 English), Kyungok Hong ( 66 Educational Psychology), Chongok Hong ( 70 Vocal Music) – received their education at Ewha. To commemorate the sisters deep connection to Ewha and honor its education, she established this scholarship fund to support the young women in Ewha. The investment income from the fund s principal will be awarded annually to the student(s) majoring in English language and literature, educational psychology, vocal music or electrical and electronic engineering. Recipients will be selected by the university, continuing the Hong sisters legacy of academic excellence and dedication to their alma mater.

Youn Young Park & Won Tae Kim Fund

In September 2024, New Jersey board member Mrs. Youn Young Park Kim(’80 English Education) and her husband, Mr. Won Tae Kim, established a permanently restricted fund. They initiated the fund with stocks valued at $20,183.70 and joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society, setting a target of $100,000. The principal and investment income will accumulate until the fund reaches this goal. Once achieved, the income generated from investments will be used to support educational initiatives at the University, with the specific purpose to be determined at that time.

Mrs. Kim has been serving as treasurer since 2016, faithfully stewarding the Foundation. Reflecting on her inspiration to establish the fund, she shared: Not long ago, I came across a phrase that said, A person with dreams looks only forward, and it reminded me of the times I used to dream while walking across the Ewha campus. That dream helped me move forward, one step at a time, over many years, through the challenges of moving to and establishing my family and career in the U.S. Even with Korea s significant progress, I still witness and hear about the inequalities women face in many fields. I believe that Ewha is now not just an institution for women’s education but a place where women can learn to advocate for equal participation and fair standing in society.

As the fund grows, Mrs. Kim envisions how it can best serve the community. Above all, she hopes it will help someone nurture their dreams at Ewha, serving as a small token of gratitude to the institution that inspired her.

Mrs. Oh pledged to continue the support with an additional $20,000 yearly for four more years, totaling $100,000, contributed on December 15th, her husband s memorial day. Prof. Hyun-Min Ahn Scholarship Fund

Professor Hyun-Min Ahn, who taught in the Department of Home Economics (Clothing and Textiles) at Ewha Womans University from 1953 to 1979, was a prominent advocate for women’s education. Throughout her career, she held significant positions, including Vice President and Director of the Korean Home Economics Association, and served on various scientific and quality control committees. She passed away in November 1999 at the age of 86. Professor Ahn s commitment to empowering women was a guiding force in her career. Her dedication to women’s education at Ewha Womans University continues to inspire today.

In honor of her legacy, her daughter Dr. Dong-Hwa Shin Taylor ( 75 Chemistry M.S.) of Durham, NC, established the scholarship fund, with a generous contribution of $125,000 in May 2024. The principal will be placed in a permanently restricted fund (PR), and the investment income will be in the temporarily restricted fund (TR), which will be used for the graduate students in the Department of Fashion Industry at Ewha. Future gifts will be added to the principal to further sustain the scholarship. An additional $250,000 is pledged for spring 2025. Dr. Taylor said, My mother always emphasized the importance of women’s education and used to say A country where women are active is an advanced nation. In line with this belief, I wish to contribute, even in a small way, to the development of Ewha Womans University, the cradle of women’s education in Korea.

In addition to establishing this scholarship fund at the Foundation, she generously donated $125,000 for the capital campaign of Ewha West Campus, which is currently being actively promoted by the university, to support the university s further growth and advancement.

Claire Kwi Hyun Kim For Washington DC Alumnae Chapter Scholarship Fund

Mrs. Claire Kwi Hyun Kim (’56 English) from Silver Spring, MD established this permanently restricted fund in December, 2022. It is for the US student(s) of Ewha International Co-Ed Summer College, preferably student(s) from the MD, VA, or Washington DC area. This is a full scholarship which includes tuition, dorm, etc., for student(s). Mrs. Kim has always wished to uplift her Alma Mater and introduce young American students to the richness of Korean culture. She has sought to extend her aid to her local alumnae chapter as well. Consequently, she decided to establish a scholarship fund, aiming to assist her alumnae, when she recognized DC chapter’s struggle to provide full scholarship to the Summer College students.

Mrs. Kim fondly reminisces her days at Ewha – like how hard she worked as the editor-in-chief with the late Prof. Kathleen Crane (English Department) for the ‘Ewha Voice’, the English newspaper of the university that they named together. She mentioned how Ewha not only nurtured her growth but also instilled a profound faith in education, playing an integral role in shaping the person she has become today. She joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society, with an initial gift of $100,000 for the fund. In addition to this new fund, she also aspires to elevate the Kathleen Crane Memorial Scholarship Fund beyond its current status. She envisions reaching a target of $100K for the fund through contributions from fellow English Department graduates. Leading by example, she has committed an initial gift of $10,000 and enthusiastically invites numerous alumnae to unite in support of this initiative.

Rebecca Heacha Park Rhee Scholarship Fund

Dr. Dukhee Rhee, from Lexington, MA and her mother Mrs. Rebecca Heacha Park Rhee (’65, Sociology) from Kendall Park, NJ established a scholarship fund with an initial gift of $10,000 in March 2023. This fund will provide a need-based scholarship for medical students at Ewha University Medical School. They asked to put the principal in the permanently restricted fund and the investment/interest income in the temporarily restricted fund, so that the scholarship will be available sooner while the fund grows. Mrs. Rhee says, “I was raised as the daughter of a rural pastor, and my journey brought me to Ewha where I navigated rigorous studies despite financial constraints. It was during those transformative years that I developed a keen desire to support diligent students in the financial difficulties – a vision that my daughter wholeheartedly embraced. The fulfillment I feel now is immeasurable”. While the accomplishments of her daughter as a physician and instructor at Harvard Medical School and her niece as a professor at Ewha University Medical School are noteworthy, her ultimate motivation for establishing a scholarship fund for the medical school, transcending familial ties, is due to her profound yearning to propel the advancement of Ewha’s medical school and hospitals. This aspiration fuels her commitment. Dr. Rhee says, “My mother grew up with little during a difficult time in Korean history, yet is one of the most generous persons I know. She thrived and persevered despite her disadvantaged background, and I have always admired not only her courage and strength, but her consistent desire to help others. Such altruistic spirit is instilled in her family as well. Her father was a Presbyterian pastor who served the community for decades. In his retirement, he founded an organization to provide support for higher education and room/board for children of rural pastors and families of underprivileged backgrounds, which is still supported by the family. I think our fund is especially meaningful given the circumstances of my mother and her family. It would be an honor to contribute to future physicians in need of support, in a way that also honors the spirit of my mother and her family”.

She aims not only to strengthen her scholarship fund but also to envision the establishment of a dedicated research fund. The scholarship fund will serve as a means of easing the financial burdens of deserving students. The research fund will underscore Rev. He says, “our mother is a remarkable woman who raised us to uphold the right values, to be ambitious, and to be disciplined She worked very hard and she taught us, her children, to do the same, and she had faith that we could do anything. It is because of her that we have become successful. I wanted to honor her by creating this scholarship because she loves Ewha University and it was such an important part of her life, and because I know she really likes the idea of helping students obtain the great education at Ewha”.

Mrs. Soo Ja Chung Chin and Mr. Richard Chin

I was excited to see the remarkable development of the University and Ewha Medical Center. I want my alma mater to develop further and become more prosperous.”

Dr. Jai Sook Sun Park (’72 Medicine) received the “Shining Ewha Alumna Award” at the 133rd Anniversary Ewha Alumnae Commemoration Ceremony in 2019.

Dr. Young-Hee Lowe International Scholarship Fund

Dr. Young-Hee Lowe (’56 Pharmacy, New York, NY) has been a steadfast supporter of Ewha. She is already a Helen Kim Leadership Society member with an established scholarship fund for the College of Pharmacy. Each year, Ewha’s domestic students benefit from the revenue generated from the fund’s $160,000 principal investment.

On December 2021, she established an additional scholarship fund for Ewha’s international students. After discovering that many students from other countries want to study at Ewha but lack the financial resources to do so, she started an international scholarship fund with the initial gift of $50,000. When the goal amount of $100,000 is reached, the income from the fund will be distributed as scholarships for international students in need of financial aid regardless of their nationality and major.

By making an Ewha education more accessible to Muslim students, he seeks to enhance the inter-religious conversation on campus: “I got involved in Ewha Foundation when they had their meeting in Cleveland. Dr. Jung Jin El-Mallawany motivated me to set up a fund to give scholarships to Muslim students who are attending Ewha W. University. I want to build bridges between Islam and other religions. In addition, the recipients of the scholarship funds will be able to build bridges between Islam and other faiths.” Mr. and Mrs. Siddiq and their four children live in Aurora, Ohio.

Heasook Ahn & Jaeyun Kum Scholarship Fund

A permanently restricted scholarship fund was established by Mrs. Heasook Ahn (’74 Nursing) and her husband Mr. Jaeyun Kum on November 16, 2021, with an initial gift of $20,000. It will primarily be used to support students at the College of Nursing Science who are members of Student Government. Mrs. Kum has stated her own participation in student council activities revealed how important student self-government is not only for their own growth, but also how crucial it is for the development of the university. Therefore, it is her hope that this scholarship will be used to encourage altruistic and
community-oriented students to take time out of their busy studies to serve fellow students and the school.

Mrs. Kum believes it was not a coincidence that she chose Ewha among many universities: “From the first day of the school year I received a lot of love from my seniors and professors. While serving on the Student Council, I fell in love with the tradition, charm and spirit of Ewha and took great pride in our school. Even after graduating and immigrating, I had a job that corresponded with my field of expertise. While working in the US, I felt the pride of being an Ewha graduate even more strongly. Now that I am retired, I want to return the love and grace I received from Ewha to my proud juniors. I am praying for the prosperity and development of Ewha.”

Mr. and Mrs. Kum joined the Helen Kim Leadership Society with a goal amount of $100,000, which they plan to meet within 2-3 years. They live in Cerritos, CA.

Miry Cho & Dr. Byung-Choo Moon Scholarship Fund

Board member of Toronto, Canada Mrs. Miry Cho Moon (BFA ’81 Ceramics, MFA ’83 Ceramics) and her husband Dr. Byung-Choo Moon established a permanently restricted scholarship fund on September 30, 2021 with the initial gift of U$ 10,000.  The goal amount has yet to be determined. The exchange rate and the lack of tax exemption benefits serve as barriers for Canadians who give to the Foundation in the U.S. Nevertheless, they hope that the fund will be used for the Division of Fine Arts, College of Art & Design.

Through compassionate generosity, Mrs. Miry Cho Moon hopes to support the women of the future: “I have worked as one of the directors of the International Foundation for Ewha W. University board since 2021. Through this experience, I have come to learn about the Ewha Foundation’s critical role in the development of Ewha University over the past 50 years, and I have come to respect the devotion of the Foundation’s members to our cause. The alumnae and friends of Ewha from all over North America appreciate what we have received from Ewha, and that we continue to receive benefits from our connection to the school, even today. Women’s education is important, not only at Ewha but all over the globe. Now, it seems that we should work together and complete the big picture of women’s education not only in Ewha but also in the world. When small warm considerations paint a larger sketch for the future to come, we can all feel the reward of life.”

Sangwol & Kwang Yun Lee Social Work Scholarship Fund

Joining the Helen Kim Leadership Society, Baylor University professor Dr. Kwang Yun Lee established the Sangwol & Kwang Yun Lee Social Work Scholarship Fund with a gift of $100,000 on March 7, 2022. Mrs. Sangwol Lee passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021, in Waco, Texas.  In memory of Mrs. Sangwol Lee, Dr. Lee expanded upon the role Ewha played in her fruitful life:

“Sangwol (’61 Social Work) loved Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and she loved to share His love with everyone. She had many very dear friends in the Ewha Family across Korea and the United States. Her talent in hospitality and discipleship impacted many students and visiting international scholars over the years at Penn State and Baylor Universities. She lost one lung to tuberculosis, but after long and difficult recovery, she enrolled in the Dep. of Social Work in Ewha W. University in 1961, earning her BA in 1965 and MA in 1969.”

Dr. & Mrs. Lee have always wished to share the spiritual and material blessings they received from God, with students who are in need. If recipients of this scholarship want to express their appreciation, the Lees hope that they would someday share their blessings with others who are similarly in need.

Sin Ok Hong Memorial Scholarship Fund

Suwanee, GA alumna Dr. Jung Ja Hong (’66 Medicine) established a permanently restricted scholarship fund with $30,000 on July 15, 2022. The scholarship is named after her beloved sister Ms. Sin Ok Hong (’73 Religious Music) who passed away in 2020. After graduating in 1973, Ms. Hong worked as an employee at Ewha W. University for 28 years. After retiring from the University, she immigrated to the US in 2003, where she studied kindergarten education while working as a kindergarten teacher. In 2009, she was sent to Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, Africa, with the support of the Nashville Presbyterian Korean Church (Tennessee), and served as a missionary till 2018. While in Dar Es Salaam, she founded <Faith Kindergarten>. However, her missionary work was not limited to kindergarteners; she shared the Good News of Jesus and God’s love with the children at Sunday Schools and the students at the United African University of Tanzania.

Dr. Hong said her sister was always happy and lived a life full of gratitude: “Especially, Sin Ok used to thank God for giving her the opportunity, at the age of 62, to serve as a missionary to participate in His Mission she always wanted to do in Africa.” She is grateful to the churches, friends, and family who supported her sister through prayer and financial support and wishes for her sister’s generosity to be remembered through this scholarship fund. The Sin Ok Hong Memorial Scholarship will be used to support international students from developing countries who need financial assistance.

Steve & Sonja Joo Curry Scholarship Fund

On January 13, 2022, board member Mrs. Sonja Joo Curry (’89 German Literature) and her husband Mr. Steve Curry in Jasper, GA established a permanently restricted scholarship fund with an initial gift of $10,000. With a total pledge of $100,000, they have joined Helen Kim Leadership Society. When it reaches its goal amount, all income from the fund will be given to Christian student(s) majoring in Music to finance their tuition.

They stated that, “we have always been involved with Christian music in each church we have been members of.  Over time we have found that one of the biggest problems that churches face has been a lack of funding for choir directors and for soloists when required. Until recently, we have never been able to afford the funds to support Christian music or to support Christian musicians; however, we now have the financial capacity to support Christian musicians. We are truly supportive of any Christian ministry; now that we are financially secure, we can open our hearts to do what we have always wanted do.”

Thomas & Jeewan Kim Hong Family Scholarship Fund

Board Member Thomas Hong, Esq. and his wife Mrs. Jeewan Kim Hong (’89, Library), their daughter Danica Hong, Esq. and son Mr. Joseph Hong established a family scholarship fund with an initial gift of $30,000 on March 14, 2022.

Mr. & Mrs. Hong have always wanted to support the Ewha students through scholarships. When they finally decided to establish a fund, their children Danica and Joseph wanted to join in giving to their mother’s alma mater. Mrs. Hong attributes her generous spirit to the Christ-centered education that she received at Ewha: “I know there are alumnae who entered to Ewha without faith, attended Ewha’s compulsory chapel, and became Christians later in their lives. To me, the existence of Ewha, which fosters this Christian faith, is so precious. I learned about the spirit of sharing and giving, the basic teaching of Christianity, at Ewha. I wanted to put that into practice. I heard that a senior (“Sunbae”) in the Library Science gives a lot to my alma mater. I am happy and honored to join this giving. I hope that the establishment of this scholarship fund will contribute to the education of future leaders at Ewha and ignite a fire for sharing and giving.”

The Hong family lives in Fairfax, VA. When it reaches its goal amount of $50,000, the scholarship will support students in financial need who major in Library Science. After reaching their pledged amount, they plan to continue adding gifts to the principal.

Jungsil Cho & Jae Yoon Ro Scholarship Fund

Dr. Jungsil Cho Ro (’72 Med), a board member in Houston, TX, and her husband Dr. Jae Yoon Ro established a permanently restricted fund on December 31, 2020. After the goal amount is reached, the investment income from the principal will be used for the Jungsil Cho & Jae Yoon Ro Scholarship for the Medical School. Dr. Ro realized that there have been many underprivileged students in the Medical School. “The tuition for Medical School has been very high for many students. Today, some medical schools in the U.S. and a school in Korea waive the tuition for their education. I hope that Ewha Medical School becomes a tuition free school like those schools in the future. My gift could be just a small addition in establishing such a direction,” said Dr.Ro.
